Tokyo - Day One

Our first full day in Japan we explore parts of Tokyo. On this page we give you the details of the plan, and some options for you, and some general information. We really do want you to get feeling comfortable getting around the city.

We'll gather in the hotel lobby around 7:30 a.m. and we're off...

  • Leave by the hotel's main entrance and cross the street to Shinagawa Station, find the Keikyu Airport Express.
The Keikyu line platforms are on the Western side of the station at a higher level than the JR platforms. Platform 2 should be the right platform; take the train bound for Sengakuji / Asaksua (use your Pasmo card)
  • Get off at Sengakuji (A7, first stop, 2 minute ride), transfer ...
  • Take the Toei subway Asakusa line (use your Pasmo card)
  • Get off at Daimon (A9, the second stop, 4 minute ride) to change to the Oedo line (E20) (Pasmo card)
  • Get off at to Tsukijishijo (E18, second stop, 4 minutes) and exit to the street
  • Walk a few blocks to the Tsukiji market (follow the crowds!), arriving around 8:00.
  • At Tsukiji there is the outer market, with shops and restaurants (breakfast here), and the inner market (where fish and other foodstuffs are delivered to be bought by restaurants and grocery stores); explore; WATCH OUT: do not get in the way of the workers (many driving small fork lifts quite fast).

  • When we're ready to leave, re-assemble at the main entrance, and we will walk to the Hama Rikyu gardens.

Note: the circle near the bottom is where we catch the boat

  • The boats leave for Asakusa at 10:45, 11:15, 12:05, 12:45, ...; about a 45 minute ride.
  • Spend some time (maybe an hour or so) at Asakusa. Lots to see; maybe get a bite to eat.
  • The Ginza line metro station is near the river; Asakusa is the end of the line (G19), so get on a train heading for Ginza; (Pasmo card); get off at the Ginza station (G9, 10th stop, about 21 minutes)

Now we are at the famous Ginza shopping district, and there are lots of options:

  • Stroll the Ginza, exploring department stores - basement areas are where you can find a wide variety of foods, often including free samples
  • Visit the Imperial Palace and stroll around, see the famous Nijubashi bridge
  • Check out the amazing hotels; have a drink in one of the bars

As always, you are welcome to stick with us, or wander on your on. If you are on your own, the way to get back to our hotel is 1) take a taxi; 2) take a train. There are three nearby train stations, each of which have access to lines which go to Shinagawa station, where we started the day, across from our hotel:

  • Tokyo station
    • JR Tokaido line, track 8
    • Ltd. Express Narita Express, track 1
    • JR Keihin-Tohoku Negishi Line
    • JR Yamanote line (outer loop)
  • Yurakucho station
    • JR Yamanote line (outer loop)
  • Shimbashi station
    • JR Tokaido line, track 8
    • Ltd. Express Narita Express, track 1
    • JR Keihin-Tohoku Negishi Line

Dinner is unplanned, on your own or we can hunt for a fun place together.
