Trip-related background
  • Japanese language ability:
    • Conversation: Basic
    • Reading: Intermediate
    • Writing: Basic

  • Previous travel experience:
    • I have been on three cross-country trips and visited over 30 US states. I flew alone to Massachusetts and Maine in the summer of 2014. I went on a cruise to visit Guatemala, Belize, and Mexico. I've been on vacation to Hawaii, Alaska and Jamaica.

What I like about Japan / Japanese culture:

I appreciate agriculture, flower arranging, animation, kendo, fashion, architecture, and technology. I was raised on a lot of Japanese culture from my father, as his apartment contained a lot of old Japanese furniture and media. I embraced it myself by studying the language and watching Japanese movies and television, and reading Japanese manga. I am considering studying kendo later.

What I hope to get from this adventure:

I hope to get an understanding of what it is like to live in the country and culture that I've studied and loved for years, as well as experiencing a way of living that is different from my own.
