  • Other connections to Japan:
    • I have volunteered in the Japanese Garden at the Denver Botanic Gardens for the last 5.5 years and have come to learn about some the traditions. Our curator is from Japan (Ebi Kondo) and has helped me understand some of the Japanese traditions and mindset. But of course I have only skimmed the surface. I have read some interesting articles about Japan and a book or two.

What I hope to get from this adventure:

Hope to learn more about Japanese culture, which is some what unknown to Americans. Japan is an amazing country which industrialized very quickly, but has some very strong culture from ancients, and I would like to get a good understanding of that.

Things about me I'd like to share (work, family, personal history, hobbies, interests):

Work

I am retired, was in money management. Now as I mentioned I volunteer at the Denver Botanic Gardens. I also work three months a year at a small garden center selling plants and gardening supplies which I really enjoy.

Family

My wife Cathy will join me on this trip. She is a retired special education teacher who has always enjoyed traveling, even as teenager she went to Europe for several weeks on a tour with a group of young people. We have there children in their late 20s, and two of the three love to travel.

Interests

Favorite hobbies are sports, nature, gardening, history, travel, current events and culture. I find there is just no enough time to read about all the things that interest me. Understanding why people think they way they do has been a curiosity of mine for many years.
