Packing and Laundry Strategies

This page discusses how to plan your wardrobe taking into account some strategies for cleaning. See also the Discussions page on packing.

There are several alternatives to consider:
  • Pack 12 complete outfits - not recommended
  • Plan on washing / drying clothes in your room
  • Use hotel services (no hotel we're staying at has in-house laundry facilities for use by guests)
  • Use local laundry / cleaning services
  • Wear the same clothes for 13 days without cleaning - please, no!
Below is a description of our trip in terms relating to laundry strategies:
  • Wed Oct 12 - travel day: one outfit for the 12th and the 13th, no chance to change!
  • Thu Oct 13 - travel day: one outfit for the 12th and the 13th, no chance to change!
  • Fri Oct 14 - walking; free time from about 3:00
  • Sat Oct 15 - train and walking; free time from about 1:00, dinner together
  • Sun Oct 16 - bus to Takayama with stop in Matsumoto, arrive late afternoon / early evening;
                  could use local laundromat / cleaners;
  • Mon Oct 17 - plans by Takayama; can have laundry picked up in morning, returned after lunch,
                  then pack in bag to ship

                  ship bags to Hiroshima, keep out 2 changes of clothes
  • Tue Oct 18 - plans by Takayama;
  • Wed Oct 19 - train to Nagoya; Nagoya castle; train to Hiroshima
  • Thu Oct 20 - full day in Hiroshima
  • Fri Oct 21 - train to Kyoto, afternoon sites; could use local laundromat / cleaners
  • Sat Oct 22 - pretty full schedule; could use local laundromat / cleaners
  • Sun Oct 23 - Nara and Sagano; could use local laundromat / cleaners
  • Mon Oct 24 - return home; long day; one outfit

Both the ryokan in Takayama and the hotel in Kyoto have laundromat / cleaners within a five minute walk.

Takashi Nomura has volunteered to walk us to the laundromat in Takayama.

There is also a laundry in Takayama called Yanagiya; they are willing to collect a load of laundry from the ryokan in the morning and deliver in the evening (sample prices: ¥ 450 (about $6.00) for a "long t-shirt", Underwear : ¥ 150 to 200).

The hotel in Kyoto also provides laundry services (sample price: ¥ 525 (about $7.00) for a casual shirt such as a polo shirt).

So keep these points in mind and decide on the best strategy for your needs. Hope this helps.
